ATLAS’ History
1995 - Three Ortiz brothers founded ATLAS, beginning with services focused on commercial and residential natural stone and other hard surfaces.
1999 - Two of the brothers relocated to Arizona. Mark Ortiz partnered with James Paley, shifting the company toward a more specialized focus on natural stone restoration and repair.
2000 - Stephen Gillett joined ATLAS as a Technician, beginning his long-standing career with the company.
2005 - James Paley became the sole owner of ATLAS Marble & Stone Care. During this time, he played a key role in educating Orange County builders and designers through “Geology 101,” helping clients better understand stone materials and set realistic expectations for installation and maintenance.
2019 - Stephen Gillett purchases ATLAS Marble & Stone Care from James Paley, continuing the company’s legacy while bringing his own experience and leadership into the future.
2022 – Larry Charpentier joins the company as an outside consultant helping Steve restructure the company for future expansion/growth and organizational efficiencies.
2024 – Larry Charpentier becomes an owner of Atlas Marble and Stone Care and continues to drive cost reductions, efficiencies across operations, and helps drive top line revenue for the company.
Get to Know the Team:
Stephen Gillett has over 26 years of hands-on experience in the stone restoration industry. Throughout his career, Stephen has worked in a variety of roles including Technician, Operations Manager, Stone Inspector/Estimator, and now Owner—giving him a well-rounded and expert understanding of both natural stone and manmade quartz surfaces.
In addition to his field experience, Stephen has helped manage fabrication shops and supported countertop installations, further expanding his technical expertise. He has also collaborated with industry leaders like StonePro and Hard Rock Tool, performing live demonstrations of advanced restoration products, tools, and equipment for hotels and casinos around the world.
In 2019, Stephen proudly took ownership of ATLAS Marble & Stone Care, purchasing the company from his mentor and former employer. Today, he continues to build on that legacy with a commitment to quality craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional customer service
Larry Charpentier has over 36 years of accounting/finance, consulting, operations, and executive management experience. Larry is a business turnaround specialist with a wide array of hands-on experience who has owned and operated many businesses in many industries over the past 30 years including construction, retail, hospitality, automotive, publishing, and apparel.
Larry was contacted by Steve in 2022 to help him continue the growth and success of Atlas Marble and Stone Care, and with each of their own unique experiences and expertise, they have been able to take Atlas Marble and Stone Care to the next level.
Larry has his BA in Business Administration from the California State University of Fullerton, and his MBA from the University of California Irvine.
